Spencer Oliver believes Tyson Fury’s plan to gain weight for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk could prove to be his downfall.
Fury gets a unique opportunity for revenge when he takes on previous conqueror Usyk on December 21six months after his undisputed title defeat in May.
The ‘Gypsy King’ will likely have to make adjustments to outsmart the gifted heavyweight king.
One of those changes is that Fury is likely to gain weight before the collision beyond the 19 stone mark according to reports.
He has already shown a bulkier than normal physique in training camp, as he prepares for Malta.
But in the latest episode of talkBOXING, former boxer Oliver believes a heavier Fury could ultimately be his own downfall.
He said, “If Tyson Fury can rediscover the movement he had during the time by 2015 Wladimir Klitschko.
“But there are rumors going around that he could perform much harder here.
‘Will that be his downfall? Because if he wants to bully him, I think you’re playing into Usyk’s hands.
“Maybe he should set the traps, he’s good at that. Use that uppercut he did in the sixth round and bring in Usyk.
“That might be the way to do it, instead of trying to bully him.”
On the outcome of the fight, Oliver added: “I can see a way for Fury to win, but I’m leaning towards Usyk.
“Fury is great at rematches, but Usyk is also good at making adjustments.
“It’s still a 50/50 fight, but I’m still leaning towards Usyk.”
Fury weighed heaviest last year at 19st 8lbs for his showdown with ex-UFC champion Francis Ngannou.
His weight could well lag behind that, but it’s still a likely sign that he’ll try a different approach to beating Usyk.
It has been a turbulent build-up to the first clash for Fury, whose camp claims he was unable to spar.
This time, things have gone much smoother and the former WBC champion has a new game plan that he’s working on, according to a friend Billy Joe Saunders.
“Listen, I’ve been watching closely and I’ve spoken to his nutritionist Greg Marriot,” he told talkSPORT’s White & Jordan.
“His weight looks good, his sparring is going well and he looks good.
“I think the game plan they have now for this fight, after talking to Tyson recently, makes a lot more sense.
“It makes a lot more sense to me, the game plan last time was picky and run around.
“It was about showing off in the ring and I think he enjoyed it a little too much.
“He let Usyk back in, but this time I don’t think Usyk will get back into the fight if Tyson is up in the first six rounds this time. Absolutely not.”
The highly anticipated rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury will be broadcast live on talkSPORT on December 21.
In the first fight, the Ukrainian won via split decision to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since 1999. He will now put his WBA, WBO and WBC titles on the line in Riyadh.
